Buying the technology is not the hard part

Assistive technology only works when it is set up for the person using it, configured to work with the systems they need, and supported by colleagues who understand it. Software bought and left unconfigured helps nobody, and the employee is usually the one left working around it.

We handle the practical side: assessing what someone needs, setting it up with your systems, training the person using it, and training the team around them.

This part of the work goes back to a university computer lab, where our founder supported students using JAWS, ZoomText, Kurzweil 3000 and similar tools, and learned that the setup and the teaching matter more than the purchase.

What we provide

  • Needs assessments

A conversation with the person about the tasks they do, then a recommendation of tools that fit their work.

  • Screen readers and magnification

Deployment and configuration of tools such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, Narrator and ZoomText, with hands-on experience going back to 2010.

  • Speech and alternative input

Dictation, switch access, alternative keyboards and pointing devices, configured for the individual.

  • Reading and literacy software

Text-to-speech, scanning and OCR tools such as Kurzweil 3000 and ABBYY FineReader, for people who work better with documents read aloud.

  • Built-in accessibility features

The tools already in Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Microsoft 365, turned on and set up properly.

  • Training for the individual

One-to-one sessions using the person’s real work, not a generic demonstration.

  • Training for the team

Sessions for colleagues, managers and IT staff: how the technology works, and how to avoid breaking it.

How a deployment runs

  1. Assess

We talk to the person about their work and what currently gets in the way.

  2. Recommend

Options in writing, with costs, so you can approve or ask questions before anything is bought.

  3. Deploy

Installation and configuration with your actual systems, tested on the tasks that matter.

  4. Train and follow up

Training for the person and their team, then a check-in once it has been used in earnest.

Example engagements

Illustrations of the kind of work this service covers, not descriptions of past clients.

  • Example

A new employee who uses a screen reader

Assessment before the start date, the screen reader configured with the company’s systems, and a session for the immediate team on working together effectively.

  • Example

    A public-facing service desk

Magnification, high-contrast settings and hearing-loop equipment set up at a counter, with staff trained on offering help without assuming what someone needs.

Common questions

Do you carry out accessibility audits or fix our website?

Not currently. Our accessibility work is assistive technology deployment and training. If you need a website audit or remediation, say so and we will tell you plainly that it is outside what we do.

Do you work with individuals or only organizations?

Mainly with organizations, including employers arranging workplace adjustments. Get in touch if you are arranging something for yourself and we will tell you whether we can help.

Can you work with our IT department?

Yes, and it usually goes better that way. Assistive technology often needs specific permissions or software policies, and it is worth agreeing those early.

How does this relate to Section 508 and the ADA?

Those rules are why many organizations come to us, but we are not a compliance auditor. We help you meet the practical side: employees and customers who can actually use your technology.
